BlackNorth BEGIN is a Canadian web platform built to support Black entrepreneurs across every stage of their business journey. Its mission is to foster an inclusive environment that promotes equity and success by bringing business-building resources together in one place.
The platform gives Black business owners a single hub to access curated learning content, discover funding opportunities, connect with discounted professional services, and join a mentorship network, backed by 30+ major partner organizations and a free account model.
The Issue At Hand
Black entrepreneurs in Canada lacked a single, trusted place to find resources relevant to them, with funding, learning content, and professional services scattered across many disconnected sources.
There was no easy way to discover funding dedicated to Black-owned businesses, essential professional services were often out of reach for early-stage founders, and there was limited access to mentorship and a peer network of experienced entrepreneurs, all of which pointed toward one unified platform.

Before building, we found that the core challenge wasn't a lack of resources but their fragmentation, which shaped how the platform needed to be structured and who it needed to serve.
Key Activities
User Range Discovery
Found that users ranged from aspiring founders to established business owners, so resources needed to be organized by business stage and relevance rather than presented as a single list.
Four-Pillar Structure
Structured the platform around four core pillars: Learning, Funding, Business Services, and Mentorship, based on how entrepreneurs actually search for support.
Trust & Credibility Requirements
Recognized that trust was essential for adoption, leading to prominent partner organization logos, community testimonials, and a simple free-registration experience.
Third-Party Content Integration
Identified that many services and funding opportunities came from external partners, requiring the platform to present third-party offers in a clear, consistent way.
Free, Low-Barrier Access Model
Determined that registration needed to be free and frictionless so users could quickly create an account and unlock member resources.
